This reciprocal frame structure combines the best of both worlds: rapid and precise 6-axis robotic milling of unique but very similar timber components with holographic guides and aruco markers to ensure they are assembled correctly.
The workshop introduced participants to robotic workflows and mixed reality environments with Fologram, comparing the relative strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Despite the precision of 6-axis milling, some part clean up is required and a fully automated assembly workflow would have been difficult within the time constraints of the project. Holographic instructions ensured the project could be assembled quickly and accurately, simplifying the need for drawn documentation.
The project continues work by the Aarhus School of Architecture exploring mixed reality timber work with second year students. Students completed small furniture projects using Fologram and the HoloLens over the course of 2 weeks.
Ryan plans to extend these techniques to steel fabrication with partners in Dublin.
