Matias Del Campo’s students at the University of Michigan have completed a small pavilion from PET pipe. The bending active structure was laid out and erected using a holographic guide, allowing the team to eliminate the need for printouts, templates and jigs and visualize deviation from the simulated model.
Working from flexible materials with holographic guides is always challenging due to difficulties in maintaining alignment between the static digital model and the moving physical counterpart. For this approach to generalize it is important to design a fabrication process that allows flexible material to be fixed in place (to foundations, temporary structure or existing rigid components) in order for the digital guide to be useful during fabrication.
