Luo Dan and her colleagues at Tsinghua University developed a technique for fabricating arbitrary space frame geometries using a 3D printing pen augmented with a holographic guide. Typically the 3D printing pen is used to create quick spatial mockups and requires a high degree of skill to produce detailed models. By using a holographic model to show the desired outcome, students were able to produce complex structures with subtle variations and articulations in very short time frames.
The fluid nature of the material inevitably produces pretty messy results working with this approach, but there is an opportunity here to think about design languages that benefit from this both these material qualities as well as the precision of digital models.
