In our workshop in Mexico City for ACADIA in 2018 we wanted to see if it would be possible to fabricate arbitrary and complex notch joints in variable timber stock material using holographic guides to template out the cuts required. This prototype that resulted was very much a proof of concept that established that although the templating process was very simple and effective, our team of unskilled amateur carpenters wasn’t up to the task of actually fabricating them. The approach shows quite a bit of promise and has been upscaled by Eri Sumimoto in japan.
