Youngwoo Kang completed a thesis project at Victoria University in Wellington using Fologram to guide the installation of steel components in a reciprocal frame structure. Youngwoo used Aruco markers to tag and track each part in the structure. The marker positions and IDs were used as inputs to a parametric model that would display the joint geometry and position of the assembled part within the installation. This helped minimize errors with assembling the self-similar parts, and allowed for an ad-hoc assembly sequence that could be determined by the fabricator.
This approach generalizes well to other fabrication systems using discrete parts, where the holographic guide is primarily used to perform quality control (checking for incorrect installation) rather than as a template for free-form construction.
