Andre Kong from Heatherwick Studio completed this small proof of concept model using holographic guides for locating and orienting drilled dowel joints. Individual parts were fabricated by aligning the dowel beneath a drill press using a holographic model to show the exact angle and orientation of the drill hole required. Drill holes are made slightly larger than necessary to account for margins of error in following the holographic guide. These components were then assembled using stock lengths of dowel of a smaller radius to span between the drilled parts. Working with such simple components from stock material with universal, simple joints enables this technique to be scaled up to other materials or more complex formal systems. A similar approach was scaled up by
AHA & ESA with the drilled connections in their furniture project.
